Walking group steps up to the plate

LEAP group combines exercise and chat with the perfect partner – cake!
If you have ever thought about going somewhere for a good walk but couldn’t be bothered organising something, LEAP has the answer for you.
For every fortnight, its walking group leaves Halfway and heads to the hills, or lochs, or parks with one thing in common. A nice, warm tearoom in which to end the day.
Every second Tuesday sees a large group of walkers congregate outside the charity’s Halfway office before heading off in a hired coach to their latest destination.
The group is organised by Hugh McNulty and is aimed at keeping people active but not necessarily straining every muscle.
Hugh said: “ Wherever we go we make sure there’s a decent walk for those that want to stretch their legs, and a shorter walk for anyone who is just starting walking or doesn’t think they can manage a longer distance.”
The group has been getting out and about for more than 20 years now, and some people are long-time members. Kathleen Gibson has been walking with the group for around 12 years and she said: “If it was just myself, I’d stay in the house but because it’s the Tuesday group I go out walking. If it’s in your calendar you get out and do it.”
Sheena Anderson added: ““After I retired, friends who came to the Walking Group told me about it. I like the companionship and the fact everything is done for you, you don’t have to organise anything, and the carrot is the cake at the end.
LEADING THE WAY … (l-r) Lesley Berrie, Patricia Gough, Kathleen Gibson lead the group followed by Jeanette Tallen and others.
HAVING THEIR CAKE … (l-r) Margaret McCue, Ann McPake, Irene Campbell and Nan Crossan enjoy their walking reward.
“You don’t have to go with a pal, you can just turn up and meet people. If you don’t step out that front door, you don’t know what’s out there. Just open it and get out there.”
Hugh echoed that sentiment saying: “People don’t need to make any arrangements; you just get yourself to Halfway Library and we take you to a nice location. If you don’t have access to a car, it lets you get out and about easily.
“And, of course, there’s cake afterwards. That makes the day more worthwhile.”
