Keepfit is a great hit for people living with Parkinson’s

2025-03-26

New exercise class in Blantyre Life is full and second class planned for Rutherglen

LEAP’s new Keepfit with Parkinson’s class in Blantyre Life is proving a hit with people living with the disease.

Even before the class started in February, it was full, and the charity had a waiting list of interested people.

The new class came about after a Blantyre resident asked about the possibility of a class in Blantyre Life. Blantyre Life contacted Parkinson’s UK, who turned to LEAP, who duly completed the circle.

Lysanne Erlings, LEAP’s learning and leisure co-ordinator said: “After Parkinson’s UK contacted me, I followed one of their courses to learn more about the disease and how exercise could help.

“Claire, one of our tutors also followed the course, and signed up to deliver a class for people living with Parkinson’s.

“We then applied to Parkinson’s UK for funding, which they thankfully gave us, and the course filled up as soon as we advertised it.”

Margaret Clarkson, who attends the class, said: “It is a good class. I like the people in the class and the exercises. I really like the boxing; I hadn’t done that before. I like it; it’s a good way to get my frustration out.”

John Gallacher said: “The trainer is great, the class is great and I feel a difference in my movement. I feel less stiff.”

Such has been the success of the class, Lysanne is looking to add another class in Rutherglen. She said: “Anyone who is interested in joining a new Keepfit with Parkinson’s in Rutherglen on Mondays between 11.30 and 12.30 should get in touch
